Copenhagen-Berlin-Hamburg

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM COPENAGHEN, BERLIN AND HAMBURG?

This was quite the adventure for us as these were destinations we had never traveled to before. We knew we needed to travel in Summer, and were looking for destinations where, as my son would say, the weather is not brutal. Northern Europe won! The weather in all of our locations ranged from high 50’s/low 60’s in the morning and evenings and peaked at mid 80’s during the day. We did experience rain a few days; but that’s expected in Denmark, where it rains often.

GETTING THERE

We flew using our AmEx® points, converted to Flying Blue miles on Air France, which we accumulated by using our AmEx card for everyday purchases. For this trip we wanted to arrive and leave from different destinations so we booked one-way tickets to get to Coppenhagen and then return from Berlin. This trip was also a bit different because it was the first time we traveled with the kiddos on an itinerary that had connections (both in Paris, France). Once we arrived we walked to most places; but did rent a car to get from Coppenhagen to Billund; from Billund to Hamburg; and from Hamburg to Berlin. We also kept the car for one day in Berlin to allow us the flexibility to take a day trip to the nearby town of Potsdam and visit the palace of SanSsouci. Thanks to our points, the flights were free (except for fees and taxes) and so were our Marriott® hotels.

Where we stayed

  • Copenhagen: Scandic Spectrum
  • Billund: Legoland!
  • Hamburg: Marriott
  • Berlin: JW Marriott

WHAT WE DID

We mixed in a variety of activities while on this trip. We did much sightseeing in all of our destinations, took walking tours (and a hop on/hop off tour in Hamburg) to learn more about the places we were seeing. We visited historical sights (e.g. palaces, the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, etc.) and also kept things fun for the little travelers with visits to Tivoli Gardens, LegoLand, Miniatur Wunderland, and a chocolate factory – where they made they own chocolate while learning how it’s processed! Check out our full itinerary below.
